What it was
Stronghold 3 (2011), built on a new engine under a new parent company. Its engine later powered Crusader II (2014), a story sequel to the 2002 Crusader, and Warlords (2021) as a separate spin-off set in East Asia.
The gap it left
Between 2011 and 2026 the mainline went quiet — 15 years of spin-offs, Kingdoms (2012) and Definitive remasters. Stronghold 4 is the first numbered entry since, which is exactly why a quarter-million players wishlisted it within weeks.
