How the Stronghold Economy Works: Food, Taxes & Honour
Last checked: 2026-10-28
The castle-sim loop every Stronghold runs on — and the levers the studio has confirmed for Stronghold 4.
The loop in one paragraph
Peasants arrive when your town is attractive; they staff buildings; buildings produce food, goods and gold; taxes and rations tune peasant happiness; happiness decides whether peasants stay or leave. Break the loop anywhere and the town spirals. This is the "castle sim" formula the series invented in 2001 — and Stronghold 4 is an explicit return to it.
The levers confirmed for Stronghold 4
The official store page: "Balance honour, taxes, food and more to keep peace amongst the peasantry!" — plus a living world that presses on the loop: snow hinders crop growth and heavy rain reduces archery range.
What the demo teaches already
- Wood before everything. Every building costs timber; you start with ~400 planks and a wood camp is the tutorial's first order.
- Food is a chain, not a number. Farm → granary → rations. The demo's most common failure is the granary sitting empty while peasants starve.
- Housing gates everything. "Peasants needed" = build houses; no peasants, no workforce, no economy.
Series knowledge that transfers
In classic Stronghold, the strongest income pattern was higher taxes offset by generous rations — happiness nets out, gold increases. Whether 4 keeps that exact math gets verified against the release build, with numbers, on this page.

Statistics, cost and balance details have not been published. They will be added — with the build they came from named — once the game is playable.
