Stronghold 4 vs Stronghold: Definitive Edition
Last checked: 2026-10-28
The beloved 2023 remaster of the 2001 original vs its 2026 prequel — and why the answer is usually "both, in this order".
The relationship
They are two ends of one story: Definitive Edition (2023) is the remastered 2001 original; Stronghold 4 is its narrative prequel — the tale of Penryn of Wethel, set years before it.
Head to head

Which first?
Story order says Stronghold 4 first (it is the beginning). Value order says Definitive Edition first — complete, beloved, cheap, and it teaches the exact economy loop Stronghold 4 builds on. Nothing in 4 requires having played it.
